Article: Vegan Restaurants in Washington D.C.

Biscuits and Gravy at Sticky Fingers
Before I became a vegan, I used to just eat wherever it was convenient while I traveled. Occasionally I'd look for vegetarian options on lengthy road trips, but urban travel didn't require much prep. Now that I'm on a more limited diet and avoid many fast food chains, I like to plan ahead. Coming up with a variety of fun places to eat ahead of time gives me something to look forward to and also helps simplify the "what's for dinner?" question. Below are my top picks for D.C. and a list of other fun vegan-friendly places.

Top Picks:
  • Sticky Fingers - This was one of the most highly-anticipated stops on the D.C. trip. It's an awesome vegan bakery and cafe. We went there twice because it was so delicious! Click here for my full review.
  • Teaism - A great vegan-friendly restaurant that focuses on tea and healthy eats. Multiple locations make this an easy stop. I loved the Asian-inspired dishes. Click here for my full review.
  • Bread & Brew - A fun cafe with beer and some tasty vegan options. Has a variety of soups, sandwiches, salads, and more. Click here for my full review.
  • Protein Bar - A fun fast-casual chain that offers great vegan options using ingredients like quinoa, kale, and chia seeds. Focus is on bowls, salads and wraps.  Currently has three locations in D.C., including one within walking distance of the National Mall (where vegan options are woefully limited).
  • Cosi - A soup and salad chain with literally a dozen locations in D.C. I stopped there for breakfast and has their vegan oatmeal and fruit salad. An affordable way to get breakfast. Vegans could probably customize a salad as well - the website has great allergy info.
Other Tasty Choices:
While I didn't get the chance to try these places, each seemed like a good option for vegans.
  • Juice Joint Cafe - Juice bar with some vegan-friendly options for food as well.
  • Falafel - A falafel restaurant with clearly-marked vegan items.
  • Freshii -Customizable bowls, salads, and wraps with an emphasis on healthy ingredients. Three locations in D.C.
  • Sweetgreen - Salads, wraps, and juices with a customizable option as well. Nine D.C. locations.
  • Le Pain Quotidien - French bakery chain with vegan-friendly options. Several D.C. locations.
  • Pizzeria Paradiso - Italian place that offers pizzas with vegan mozzerlla.
