Restaurant Review: Austin's Sugar Mama's Bakeshop

Birthday Cake cupcake
I was delighted to discover that one of my local coffee chains, Austin Java, sold vegan cupcakes. When I asked about them, I learned that they were in fact supplied by Sugar Mama's Bakeshop, which I located by coincidence on a visit to Bouldin Street Cafe (they are literally across the street from each other). It seemed I was destined to set foot inside one day, so I made a point to try the delicious treats in their home bakery.

Pros:
  • Fun cupcake names
  • Cute vintage decor
  • Several vegan options
  • Environmentally and socially conscious
  • Treats carried across Austin
Cons:
  • Rotating flavors, particularly for vegans

Summary:
I had only heard of Sugar Mama's vegan cupcakes before I visited, so I was a little surprised to learn that it wasn't an all-vegan bakery. The vegan flavors rotate depending on the day of the week, so you might have to pick your visit date carefully if you have your heart set on a particular flavor. The quality of the cupcakes was good, and quite delicious. I love how they source ingredients consciously, using fair trade cocoa and eco-friendly packaging when possible. The interior had a vintage feel and was inviting. I had a nice visit with a non-vegan friend, and I recommend stopping by, especially if you are in the area already.
