Review: Hail Merry Miracle Tart

Chocolate Flavor
There are only a few places in Austin that have high quality vegan desserts. I was disappointed at first by the selection in the bakery at my local Whole Foods, until I discovered an option I had overlooked sitting next to the almond milk: Hail Merry's Miracle Tarts. They come in a variety of flavors and offer a very satisfying dessert that is raw, vegan, and gluten-free.

Pros:
  • Rich flavor
  • Contains organic ingredients
  • Simple recipe
  • Vegan, raw, and gluten-free
  • Tasty tart crust
  • Available in many retail locations
Cons:
  • Will have to pace yourself
Summary:
Hail Merry makes a variety of flavors of miracle tarts, but my favorite are the chocolate and chocolate mint. The texture is delectably rich and you don't have to eat a lot to feel satisfied. The inside reminds me a bit of lotus fudge, which also uses coconut oil. The crust is wonderfully chocolately and slightly crumbly, providing a nice compliment to the smooth, fudgy filling. Just be sure to pace yourself, as half of the tart has just under 200 calories, and much of that is from rich coconut oil. The tart is sweet but not overly so, and I find it comparable to a good restaurant dessert. The price is higher than everyday sweets, but given the refrigeration, quality of ingredients, and amount needed to satisfy you, it is a fair price. If you really enjoy the tarts, Hail Merry also makes mini tarts that are priced to include shipping. Mini tarts seem like a fun way to share a high quality dessert with your friends and family over the holidays. If you enjoy a rich dessert now and then and are looking for something vegan, raw, and/or gluten-free, I highly recommend checking the refrigerated section of your grocery store for Hail Merry's Miracle Tarts.
